New Sudbury Community
As part of its visioning session in October 2011, members of the Ward 8 community gathered to discuss its vision of life in our Ward. We developed this vision:
Ward 8 is a community that has the potential to become a vibrant, connected, and Healthy Community that fully enhances the human health and quality of life of all of its citizens. Within the next 5 years, our Community Action Network envisions a ward that focuses on the needs of its various populations, including young families, students, and seniors.
Part of a healthy community is meeting spaces where people can gather for recreation, for discussion, for meetings, for physical activity, and for social interaction.
The Ward 12 CAN has proposed that the community of New Sudbury should include an inclusive and centrally-located community center. The Ward 8 CAN supports this vision, and is working with the Ward 12 CAN to make this a reality.
An option for a new community center has been identified with the closing of St. Andrew’s school on Holland Avenue. The location is close to the shopping centre and to the New Sudbury Public Library, is accessible via transit, and is a one-story fully-accessible building. Discussions are being held with the City and with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board about the feasibility of the City purchasing the building.
In the meantime, we have set up a community fundraising initiative that could provide us with $100,000 for setup costs. Please support this initiative by voting at the Aviva site. You’ll need to create a site account to vote. And then vote daily for this project: https://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf32856.
Please share this with your friends and family and get them to vote too!
